Identification:

শনাক্তকারী বৈশিষ্ট্যঃ

It is a medium-sized and thick snake. The scales of the snake are smooth. The color of the body is grey-brown or olive with a wide stripe on the back that runs from head to tip of tail. The head is depressed and the nostril is situated almost on the upper surface of the head. The pupil of the snake is vertical. 

এটি একটি মোটা এবং মাঝারি আকারের সাপ। সাপের আঁশ গুলো মসৃণ। শরীরের রং ধূসর-বাদামী বা জলপাই রঙ্গের। পিঠে বরাবর প্রশস্ত দাগ থাকে যা মাথা থেকে শুরু হয়ে লেজের ডগা পর্যন্ত থাকে। মাথা চ্যাপ্টা এবং নাসারন্ধ্র প্রায় মাথার উপরের পৃষ্ঠে অবস্থিত। এ সাপের চোখের তারা উল্লম্ব হয়।

Rainbow Mud Snake is the most common and found in shallow freshwater environments with muddy substrate in the waterbodies of both countryside and urban areas of Bangladesh. The snake is very intolerant of salt water. They usually breed in October-November and give birth in March (Sarker 2015). However, the species can have a long breeding period or two breeding seasons annually, one parturition in April-May and one in November-December (Murphy et al. 2002). Rainbow Mud Snake is Viviparous, gravid females give birth to 4-20 young. They primarily feed on fish but also consume frogs and lizards.

পাইন্না সাপ বাংলাদেশে প্রাপ্ত সবচেয়ে কমন সাপ গুলোর একটি। এটি বাংলাদেশের গ্রামাঞ্চল এবং শহর উভয় এলাকার জলাশয়ে কর্দমাক্ত স্থান সহ অগভীর মিঠা পানির পরিবেশে পাওয়া যায়। এ সাপ নোনা পানিতে থাকতে পারে না। এরা সাধারণত অক্টোবর-নভেম্বর মাসে প্রজনন করে এবং মার্চ মাসে বাচ্চা দেয় । প্রজাতির একটি দীর্ঘ প্রজনন সময় বা বছরে দুটি প্রজনন ঋতু থাকতে পারে, একটি এপ্রিল-মে মাসে এবং একটি নভেম্বর-ডিসেম্বরে । পাইন্না সাপ বাচ্চা প্রসব করে। স্ত্রী সাপ ৪-২০ টি বাচ্চা প্রসব করে। এরা প্রধানত মাছ খায় তবে ব্যাঙ এবং টিকটিকিও খায়।
