It is a medium sized and cylindrical shaped snake. The skin is keeled and consist of checkerboard like yellow and black patterns. There are often reddish shades found between the checks. The head is brownish and slightly flattened. The moderate size eye consists of a round pupil. There is a black stripe from each eye to the upper lip. The central part of the body is usually glossy white or yellowish.

The snake is a good swimmer and found near all types of freshwater bodies. They are active both day and night. They feed on fish, insects, frogs, lizards, and often rodents and birds. They become aggressive if threatened and frequently bite if humans keep close to this snake. However, the snake is a nonvenomous species. It is the most common snake species of Bangladesh.
এ প্রজাতির সাপ ভালো সাঁতারু এবং সব ধরনের মিঠা পানির কাছে এদের পাওয়া যায়। তারা দিন এবং রাত উভয় সময়ে সক্রিয় থাকে। এরা মাছ, পোকামাকড়, ব্যাঙ, টিকটিকি এবং প্রায়শই ইঁদুর এবং পাখি খেয়ে থাকে। ভয় পেলে তারা আক্রমণাত্মক হয়ে ওঠে এবং মানুষ যদি এই সাপের কাছাকাছি থাকে তবে প্রায়শই কামড় দেয়। তবে এরা অবিষধর প্রজাতির সাপ। এটি বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে কমন প্রজাতির সাপ।
