It is a large-sized frog, with snout-vent lengths of males: 60-90 mm and females: 70-135 mm. The dorsal color of the body is green to olive with dark markings and the ventral part of the body is whitish. Head large and triangular. Limbs are stout and strong. The tympanum is large, and the supratympanic fold is distinct. A yellow middorsal line is prominent in some specimens like H. tigerinus. There are irregular longitudinal folds present on the dorsal surface of the body. Fingers are free and toes are fully webbed.

The species inhabit flood plains, especially in waterlogged paddy fields, wet grasslands, marshes, and beels. During breeding periods, the males produce a louder sound just like a goat. It is nocturnal and feeds on insects. They breed during June-July in rainwater pools and in harvested paddy fields.
